The Barnes Choir

We are an amateur choir which has been performing in South West London since 1952 and continue to put on regular concerts three times a year.  Our aim is to perform programmes with a wide variety of works from all periods, from the familiar to the less well-known. Where possible, local artistes have been involved in solo, vocal and instrumental capacities in our concerts, and local composers have featured in our programmes. These are always of a high standard.

Our mission
We aim to promote choral singing in the community around Richmond, Sheen and Barnes.

The challenge with an amateur choir is to combine a sociable and friendly environment while raising the choir’s standard of singing. With this in mind, the choir holds a number of social events each year – barbecues, quiz suppers, Christmas party.  The choir has visited Le Pecq, just outside Paris, with which Barnes has strong cultural links: we have performed there on 2 occasions as part of the town’s Music Festival and made a repeat visit in 2013.

As well as our regular concerts, we occasionally perform for local events, most recently at Petersham Nurseries for their pre-Christmas special evening:
"On behalf of everyone at Petersham Nurseries I wanted to send yourself, Julian and the entire Barnes Choir a huge thank you for joining us last night. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. It was an absolute delight to hear you .....thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended the evening."

We audition prospective members and they need to be able to demonstrate good vocal and musical capabilities.   Sight-reading is useful, but not a requirement.

Our conductor is Julian Collings and our accompanist is Elspeth Wilkes.

Our annual programme for 2013-14 is here
