Elgar - The Music Makers

The main work in the programme, The Music Makers, was immensely popular in the years following its composition in 1912, but is now performed less frequently. Barnes Choir revelled in the motifs from the Enigma variations and other familiar tunes which enabled them to show off their excellent mellow tones with good climaxes and contrasts. Katy Bingham-Best was again the thrilling soloist with dramatic interpolations into the choral singing. Julian Collings accompanied the work on the piano with great facility. The Millennium Series

When considering how it might celebrate the Millennium the Choir decide that it might be appropriate and different to use the occasion to lead into the new century with a selection of 20th century music. The works were selected for a variety of particular reasons. The first thought was to start the series with a work from the very beginning of the century and to end 1999 with one composed at the very end. Thus we chose Parry's "I was Glad" which was composed for the coronation of King Edward VII and appropriate 1998 was the sesqui-centenary of his birth. To end the December 1999 concert we commissioned a work from a local composer Brian Daubney specially for the occasion. Of the other works performed for 1999 concerts, Sir Michael Tippett's "A Child of our Time" was selected for its significance to one of the major forces shaping the century - the Second World War and also because he was a local resident. The work was selected before his death in January 1998 and provided a fitting tribute to a notable 20th century composer. Francis Poulenc was born in 1899 so the Gloria was chosen as a centenary celebration. In December 1999 we decided to include a work by our own Conductor, Peter Gellhorn and to couple this with one by Benjamin Britten with whom Peter worked while with the Royal Opera conducting the second performance of Billy Budd, Britten himself having conducted the first. Finally to recognise that the year 2000 was the anniversary of the birth of Christ, the Choir performed Handel's Messiah to end the series in May 2000.
